Workshop on regional industrial transitions towards climate neutrality – Regional policy

07/13/2022

The OECD Center for Entrepreneurship, SMEs, Regions and Cities and the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission are organizing a on regional industrial transitions towards climate neutrality on September 12, 2022.

What is the problem?

In the transition to a climate-neutral economy by 2050, some manufacturing industries will have to undertake particularly profound transformations. These transformations will have major implications for production, investment and infrastructure to access energy, raw materials and transport for these industries under climate-neutral conditions. These manufacturing activities are regionally concentrated and access to “climate neutral” infrastructure will vary from region to region. The transformations will therefore have implications for regional development and employment. They can change skill requirements, redistribute jobs between sites and activities. Although transformations bring both opportunities and challenges, job losses may not occur where the opportunities present themselves. Given that socio-economic conditions differ between regions, workers and businesses affected, regional industrial transitions towards climate neutrality are important for a just transition.

About the event

The workshop is part of an EU-funded project which aims to support the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission in shaping support for high-carbon regions in under the Just Transition Fund.

OECD staff will present their work on regional industrial transitions towards climate neutrality. Policymakers and experts will discuss key aspects of the transition to net zero emissions by 2050 for regional development and the policies needed to achieve a just and balanced transition at the regional level. Participants can address their questions and comments to the speakers and participate in the discussion. The event will include plenary and parallel sessions. The working groups of the platform for a just transition for regions with high carbon intensity are associated with the event.
